What NOT to Pack for a Cruise

We will avoid the inevitable lecture on illegal and illicit items not permitted on airline flights, let alone oceanic cruises. Everyone knows those rules well enough to leave them be for now. However, like packing for a Caribbean cruise is slightly different than for any other mode of transport, the things that should not be brought are different as well. For example, old jeans.

Every cruise line has a different policy on jeans; in fact some disallow them entirely. Before packing, inquire into the exact requirements for jeans or if they are even permitted. Some cruise lines will allow jeans if they are properly fitted, not too revealing and in new condition. Short shorts are another item of clothing that should be left at home. Cruise lines try to target a resort casual mode of dress with a few formal occasions thrown in. What that means for ladies is flowing cotton dresses, silky pant or short outfits, skirts and blouses. For the gentlemen it would mean khakis, dress pants, collared shirts, golf shirts and of course matching shoes.

Do not pack your entire medicine cabinet. Just bring daily prescription medications, a pain reliever, a stomach remedy, and seasickness aids. Everything else is only used occasionally and is better left at home. The same goes for the cosmetic bag. Ladies, there is no need to bring your entire make-up line on a cruise. Just your favorite items, including a tinted moisturizer with an SPF will be enough. There are toiletries in each stateroom, so there is no need to pack your own shampoo and conditioner. For hair styling products, just bring a small amount in a sealable bag or a travel bottle. Most staterooms have hair dryers, so leave yours at home.

Leave valuables at home. Contrary to popular opinion, a cruise is not an opportunity to show off your personal jewelry collection. Personal style can be conveyed in so many more ways than with flashy trinkets, this is the opportunity to shine as your own person. Besides, people who show off their valuables are defining themselves as a target for thieves. Theft can and does occur, so it is best to leave valuables safely at home.

A Caribbean cruise is a whole different kind of vacation. After all, there are all the onboard activities to enjoy, and then the ports to visit as well. Make the experience the absolute best it can be, learn what to pack and what NOT to pack.
