Introduction To Search Engine Optimization

Whenever you enter a query in a search engine and hit 'enter' you get a list of web results that contain that query term. Users tend to visit websites that are at the top of this list as they naturally perceive these links to be the most relevant. If you have ever wondered why some of these websites rank better than the others then you must know that it is because of a powerful web marketing technique called Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

SEO is a technique which helps search engines find and rank your site higher than the millions of other sites in response to a search for a specified set of key phrases. SEO thus helps you get more traffic from search engines. This is one of the most efficient strategies for getting maximum benefit from your online presence.

The first thing to know about SEO is that search engines are not humans. Search engines use specific algorithms to determine what website will be ranked higher for some particular query in search results. These algorithms are kept strictly confidential, but their general concepts and principles can be found if you spend some time and analyze search engine behavior. These algorithms are constantly changing, so you will have to be able to track these changes. Unlike humans, search engines are text-driven. Search engines perform several activities in order to deliver search results - crawling, indexing, processing, calculating relevancy, and retrieving.

First, search engines crawl the Web to see what is there. This task is performed by a piece of software, called a crawler, spider, or Googlebot. Spiders follow links from one page to another and index everything they come by. Having in mind the number of pages on the Web (over 20 billion), a spider won't be visiting your page every day, sometimes crawlers may not end up visiting your site for a month or two.

After a page is crawled, the next step is to index its content. There is a giant database in which these indexes are stored, where it can later be retrieved. Essentially, the process of indexing is identifying the words and expressions that best describe the page and assigning particular keywords to the page. For a human it would be impossible to process such amounts of information, but search engines deal with the task just fine. When a search is performed, the search engine processes it and compares the search string in the search request with the indexed pages in the database.

The search engine starts to calculate the relevancy of each of the pages in its index with the search string, since there will be millions of pages with that string. There are various algorithms to calculate relevancy. Each of these algorithms has different ranks for factors like keyword density, links, or metatags. That is why different search engines give different search results pages for the same search string.

Keywords are the most important element in SEO. For every search engine, they are what search strings are matched against. Choosing the right keywords in order to optimize your results is the most important step to be successful in SEO. If you fail on this first step, the rest of the process will be a bumpy road and you will most likely be wasting your time. There are many ways to determine which keywords to use and the final list is made after a careful analysis of what the majority is searching for, which keywords have your competitors chosen and above all - which are the keywords that you feel describe your site best.

There are various other methods in SEO you will learn after observing, analyzing and experimenting with search engines. The set of methods is constantly changing depending upon the changes in search engine algorithms and depending upon the requirements of each customer. Becoming a successful search engine optimizer will take time and a lot diligence.
