Panama Bay Clean Up For Now And The Future
Due to their increase in population Panama fails to have a proper sewage disposal plan set up for the residents of their country. At this time that sewage is funneled into various rivers that carry all the waste to Panama Bay. The smell of the bay is rancid and the bacterial contamination is evidenced in various studies. For the past decade a new system for processing waste and cleaning up the bay has been taking place.

The Panama Canal is probably the most famous thing in this country as it is a vital canal used for ships to transit between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. The government of the country has been through various regimes, with the military and United States playing a big part of it. Presently the government is presided over by President Ricardo Martinelli. The country has seen a huge growth in population, in 1960 there were 1.1 million people in the country and as of 2008 there were 3.4 million.
With no sewage treatment plant for the country and the large growth in population it was difficult for the country to maintain waste disposal. Cities dumped their sewage into rivers that dumped into the bay, contaminating both the rivers and the bay. Because of this contamination the waterways were filled with bacteria and had a horrible smell.
CAF, Latin America's development bank, helps fund the Panama City and Bay of Panama Cleanup Project to begin correcting this health and environment problem. This project has been funded for more than $1 billion in the past five years, with $540 million of that coming this year. The scope of the project is to clean the areas, develop, and place a plant for waste water treatment.
The Ministry of Health is executing the construction of the sanitary drain network, sanitary sewers, and the designing, planning, and construction of the of the water treatment plant. The sanitary drain network will be approximately 135 kilometers in length encompassing all the residential areas. The sewer system will include an interceptor tunnel that will be 3 meters in diameter and 8.2 kilometers long.
To assist in the drilling of this entire sewer network, the country purchased a tunnel boring machine from Herrenknecht in Schwanau, Germany. The large machine is 124 meters long and 3.6 meters in diameter. The machine, which arrived in the country in August, is painted the colors of the Panamanian flag and has been nicknamed Gloria after President Martinelli's mother.
Presently there is a strong odor that is emitted from all of the natural water works in the country. The rivers and bay have a bad stench and a great deal of bacteria present in each. Because of that any water recreation is not taking place and there is a lack of any sort of fishing. Although there are fish still present in the water they are, many times, sick or contaminated as well. In the past, residents of the country would go swimming in the bay but with the stench and contamination that is not something that takes place anymore.
Even after the clean up project is complete it will take 10 to 15 years for nature to continue cleaning itself in the rivers and bay. Stopping the contamination is the focus of the Panamanian people at this time and this will be done by creating an infrastructure that helps with the water treatment. Once the project is completed, it is hoped that the people of Panama will be able to swim and fish in the areas waterways again.
